Variscite is a hydrated aluminium phosphate mineral deposited from phosphatic waters reacting with aluminium rich rocks at surface or near-surface conditions. Variscite is relatively rare due to alteration to other phosphate minerals, particularly Crandallite. Variscite can exhibit black webbing in the matrix, which gives it the appearance of Turquoise, however Variscite is greener. High grade Variscite is cut and polished and used in the jewellery trade. |
