Turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminium phosphate mineral found in arid regions as a secondary mineral in potassium alteration zone of porphyritic copper deposits, vein fillings in volcanic rocks and phosphate-rich sediments. Turquoise crystals are very rare. Turquoise is possibly the most expensive opaque mineral used in the jewellery trade. Turquoise is ‘enhanced’ by many techniques to preserve, colour enhance and stabilise lesser quality specimens. Faking is extensive. Some techniques are obvious (dyed Howlite or Magnesite), and some enhancing techniques are difficult to spot. Turquoise ranges in colour from sky blue to green-blue, and is most often sold as nuggets. Turquoise is fragile, and everyday oils and solvents, dehydration and sunlight can damage the finish and colour of Turquoise. Turquoise is distinctive of the region it is mined in, and can display webbing or veining of Limonite. |
