Schorl is a complex sodium iron aluminium boro-silicate hydroxide in the Tourmaline group found in granites and granitic pegmatites, high temperature hydrothermal veins and metamorphic rocks. Tourmaline has 3 species - Dravite, Schorl and Elbaite; and has 14 varieties. Tourmalines are further named by their colours. Tourmalines are formed in all colours and are often multicoloured. Tourmalines are naturally pyroelectric and piezoelectric and some are pleochroic. Schorl is a black Tourmaline, the most common, and occurs as inclusions within other crystals, such as Quartz. |
