Tanzanite is a calcium aluminium silicate hydroxide mineral, the blue gem variety of Zoisite and is found in medium grade regionally metamorphosed rocks. Tanzanite is strongly pleochroic, with three colours displayed in the same crystal; dark blue, red-purple and yellow-green. Much commercial Tanzanite is heat treated to enhance the deep blue colour of this wonderful gemstone, however heat treating diminishes the crystals pleochroism. |
