Sodalite

Sodalite is a sodium aluminium chloride silicate rock forming mineral. Sodalite is found as vein fillings in plutonic igneous rocks such as nepheline syenites. Sodalite is distinguished by its royal blue colour, but does occur in other colours.

Hackmanite is a variety of Sodalite which is tenebrescent (or reversible photochromatic) - meaning it undergoes a colour change when subjected to photonic energy like UV light, which also causes it to fluoresce. A truely remarkable mineral which can change colour from blue to purple, white to purple, or white to red depending on where in the world the mineral is sourced. The depth and intensity of the colour change varies widely.

Sodalite is used as a carved ornamental stone, often carved into spheres and deities, as well as cabochons for the jewellery trade.
