Ruby is an aluminium oxide mineral, the red variety of Corundum, the other being Sapphire. The red colour of Ruby is due to trace amounts of chromium. Pure corundum is clear and very rare, and natural Ruby is determined by trace Rutile inclusions. The colour of Corundum can be enhanced by heat treatments (and others), and natural non-enhanced gem quality Corundum commands high prices. Ruby is one of the four precious gemstones (along with Diamond, Sapphire and Emerald). Star Ruby exhibits asterism, caused by the arrangement of fine Rutile inclusions. Ruby can also exhibit the 'record keeper' habit. |
