Crystal Description

Quartz is a silicon dioxide mineral belonging to the Quartz group. Quartz is the most abundant mineral on Earth, found in most geological environments and a component in most rock types. Quartz varieties include microcrystalline Chalcedony types (each variety has its own page); and macrocrystalline Quartz types, which is clear in its purest form. Impure varieties include Amethyst, Citrine, Smokey Quartz and the massive variety Siberian Blue Quartz (each variety has its own page).

Quartz, also known as Rock Crystal, is further named after the growth types Phantom, Siberian Blue, Double Terminated; locality Tibetan Black, Herkimer Diamond; inclusions Siberian Blue, Tourmalinated; artificial coatings Aqua Aura, Opal Aura; and synthetic production Siberian Blue, Green; and that's to name but a few (each has its own page).

Naturally occurring Quartz has many industrial and technological uses. However Natural Quartz also contains many impurities which are not good for technological use. Synthetic Quartz, produced under controlled environmental conditions, creates a very pure Quartz. Two methods of producing synthetic Quartz are the Hydrothermal method, where Quartz crystals are grown from Lasca Quartz under high temperature and pressure; or the Fused (reconstituted) method, where Quartz or Silica is heated and fused (melted) into an amorphous Fused Quartz. Trace elements are doped into synthetically produced Quartz to alter its properties depending on the technological use.

Siberian Blue Quartz is the trade name of a synthetically produced blue Quartz. Although proprietary it is believed to be produced by the hydrothermal method and the blue colour derived from cobalt doping.
