Prasiolite is a trade name given to a naturally occurring green variety of Quartz. Its colouration due to a balance of ferrous iron and iron hydrate impurities, temperature and pressure during crystallisation. Prasiolite has been found as a combination of Amethyst and green Quartz within the same crystal. Prasiolite is rare in its natural form and is claimed to be found in several locations around the world. Prasiolite is artificially formed from heat treating or irradiating Amethyst and is often sold as Green Amethyst. An opaque green quartz, known as Amegreen is also created from heat treated Amethyst. |
