Petrified Wood

Petrified Wood is Chalcedony which has pseudomorphed after organic wood. Chalcedony is cryptocrystalline Quartz. Chalcedony has many varieties including Agate, Bloodstone, Carnelian, Chrysoprase, Flint, Jasper, Onyx, Sardonyx and Tiger’s Eye; to name a few. Petrified Wood can also be Opalised.

Petrified Wood occurs when organic wood has first been preserved, then silica rich fluid flows into the organic cellular structure, forming a silicified replica of the original wood. Impurities in the silica fluid create swirls of splendid colour.
