Petrified Wood is Chalcedony which has pseudomorphed after organic wood. Chalcedony is cryptocrystalline Quartz. Chalcedony has many varieties including Agate, Bloodstone, Carnelian, Chrysoprase, Flint, Jasper, Onyx, Sardonyx and Tiger’s Eye; to name a few. Petrified Wood can also be Opalised. Petrified Wood occurs when organic wood has first been preserved, then silica rich fluid flows into the organic cellular structure, forming a silicified replica of the original wood. Impurities in the silica fluid create swirls of splendid colour. |
