Opal is a hydrous silicon dioxide mineraloid (it has no crystalline structure, and between 10% to 20% water content). There are 2 groups of Opal: Precious Opal (play of colour) and Common Opal (no play of colour). Light diffracts into a spectrum of colours through ordered micro-silica spheres within Precious Opal.
