Boulder Opal

 

Opal is a hydrous silicon dioxide mineraloid (it has no crystalline structure, and between 10% to 20% water content). There are 2 groups of Opal: Precious Opal (play of colour) and Common Opal (no play of colour). Light diffracts into a spectrum of colours through ordered micro-silica spheres within Precious Opal. There are over 60 named variety of Opal making identification difficult.

Boulder Opal (Precious) is only found in Queensland, Australia and forms in cracks or as coatings on the surface of sandstone or ironstone boulders. Boulder Opal displays striking play of colour.
