Onyx

Onyx is a variety of Chalcedony, which is a variety of microcrystalline fibrous Quartz. The colour is due to minute quantities of various elements; and the banding is due to the gradual cooling of the silica. Onyx is a variety name of opaque black and white banded Agate. Specimens are cut and polished to create stunning examples. Any other banded Agate colours, or Calcites labelled Onyx are not strictly Onyx.

Onyx is distinguished by evenly spaced black and white bands.
