Alexandrite is a beryllium aluminium oxide mineral which also forms Chrysoberyl. Alexandrite differs from Chrysoberyl with trace chromium oxide replacing aluminium. Alexandrite is a rare gemstone prized for its colour change properties (pleochroism), changing from green by daylight to red in artificial light. Genuine Alexandrite is expensive and simulated Alexandrite is freely available. |
