Carnelian is a variety opaque Chalcedony, which is cryptocrystalline Quartz. Carnelian is red or reddish brown Chalcedony. The red is caused by iron oxide inclusions.

Carnelian is also known as Cornelian.

Carnelian is mostly sold tumble polished and carved, larger examples make stunning collectors pieces.
