Calcite is the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate, the other polymorphs are the minerals Aragonite and Vaterite. Calcite often contains impurities of either iron, magnesium, manganese, and occasionally with zinc and cobalt. Calcite has many varieties of crystal and massive shape and form, and occurs in all colours. Calcite forms chalk, limestone and marble, stalagmites, stalactites, flowstone and has variety names like Iceland Spar, Dogtooth, Stella Beam, Cobaltocalcite, Optical Calcite and Onyx Marble. Calcite exhibits properties of double refraction, fluorescence, phosphorescence and thermoluminescence. Iceland Spar Calcite is an optical quality, clear Calcite also known as Optical Calcite. |
