Stress:
Mental health problems are having a "huge" impact in the workplace.
A growing number of staff are taking time off for depression and stress, according to research.
A study of 30,000 workers found that mental ill health is now the second largest cause of time lost to sickness absence after muscle-related problems such as bad backs.
The findings will be "particularly worrying" for the Government in view of the "huge" increase claims for incapacity benefit, said the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Workers suffering from depression took an average of 30 days off, while stress-sufferers were away for 21 days, the poll found.
"This research shows how important it is for managers to be aware of the signs of mental ill health so that they can take action early," said the CIPD's Ben Willmott.
Employers can help to reduce stress levels by considering the causes and taking appropriate action such as improving working conditions, improving communications and providing support. Individuals may be able to help decrease their stress levels by modifying their lifestyles and improving their fitness, whilst others may find relaxation techniques helpful.
Pressure is the reaction people have to excessive, urgent or other types of demands placed on them. To meet some of life’s challenges a certain amount of pressure is necessary. If we were never put under pressure we may learn very slowly or not at all. Pressure prompts us to higher performance and sometimes to a sense of achievement. However, when there is an unresolved mismatch between the perceived pressures of the work (or home) situation and the individual’s ability to cope this can lead to stress.
Symptoms of stress vary substantially between individuals but may include: exhaustion, poor sleep, blurred vision, aching neck and shoulders, digestion problems, breathlessness, fainting, skin rashes and an increasing susceptibility to infection.
Signs of stress at work may include a lack of confidence, a reduction in productivity and performance, loss of concentration and poor decision making, erratic or poor timekeeping, unusual behaviour, becoming withdrawn or unsociable, displays of temper, irritability or aggression towards colleagues or customers, anxiety or feelings of fear and uncertainty.
Solutions — seek medical advise or guidance from your G.P. Try using Stress Reduction strategies such as physical exercise, massage, or relaxation exercises. Try talking to someone you trust about how you are feeling.
